Defining Science Fiction
Science Fiction is one of the most popular genres in film. Some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films are said genre. But what makes a film science fiction? According to its most basic terminology, science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts. The target demographic for sci-fi films (for the most part) are teenagers (ages 12-18).
Perhaps what differentiates sci-fi from all other genres is its visual elements. Things like spaceships, extraterrestrials, and lasers are just some of the imaginative features that make up the sci-fi genre. Because of this, sci-fi films often focus on visual spectacle rather than more character-driven, emotional stories. Therefore, sci-fi films will be full of wide and long shots to give the visuals a greater sense of awe and scale. Sci-fi films are also known to have loud and grand scores to accompany the grand visuals of the film

This is likely due to most of the films within the genre having an appeal to most people, which is because of the general appeal of the content. Trailers will often have an intense score with a crescendo towards the end. This is to greater heighten the sense of imagination and awe within the film. Because of the general appeal of the sci-fi genre, these films are heavily marketed and have very expensive ad campaigns.
Much like Inception, Jurassic Park also includes large-scale and imaginative visuals as well as an iconic and loud score.
